Valid in Spain

Is it valid for my AESA licence?

Yes – Spanish regulations provide for it explicitly. AESA accepts certificates from assessment bodies whose assessment method has been approved by the aviation authority of another State under Regulation (EU) 1178/2011.

Your test with GAT is conducted in cooperation with the language assessment body LTB 112, whose assessment method is approved and supervised by Austro Control, the Austrian civil aviation authority. LTB 112 carries out the second assessment and issues your certificate.

Level 4, 5 or 6

Which ICAO level do I need?

The ICAO scale has six levels. To use English on the radio you need at least Level 4. The higher your level, the less often you have to be re-assessed.

Operational

Level 4

Re-evaluation after 4 years

The operational minimum required by FCL.055. You communicate effectively in routine and unexpected situations, even if your grammar and vocabulary are not perfect.

More about Level 4

Extended

Level 5

Re-evaluation after 6 years

Confident, fluent English, even on complex topics and when things get complicated. Small errors rarely affect understanding, and you rephrase easily when a word escapes you.

More about Level 5

Expert

Level 6

No periodic re-evaluation

Precise, natural and effortless communication in almost any situation. An accent is fine. Under FCL.055, Level 6 is not subject to periodic re-evaluation.

More about Level 6

In the open assessment you don’t “buy” a Level 6. You are certified at the level you demonstrate in the test: if it doesn’t reach 6, you receive 5; if it doesn’t reach 5, you receive 4.

Level 4 only or Levels 4–6?

Level 4 only €159

  • You know you only need Level 4
  • Your English makes you a little nervous and you prefer slightly simpler tasks
  • Price matters most to you

Even with a very strong performance, the maximum certified is Level 4.

Levels 4–6 €229

  • You want to forget about it for as long as possible (Level 5: 6 years; Level 6: no periodic re-evaluation)
  • You fly professionally or are preparing for an airline selection process
  • You want the highest level you can demonstrate on record

What does your level cost per year?

An example based on current base prices (weekdays, incl. VAT). The level you achieve depends, of course, on your test.

≈ €40per year with Level 4 only (€159 ÷ 4 years)
≈ €38per year if you achieve Level 5 (€229 ÷ 6 years)
€229 onceif you achieve Level 6: no periodic re-evaluation

How it works

From booking to certificate in four steps

No travel, no account to create and no waiting for anything to arrive by post.

  1. Choose your slot

You see free dates instantly in the online calendar, 7 days a week and often for the next few days. No account needed.

  2. Pay and get ready

After payment you receive three emails: the confirmation with your Zoom link, a request for a copy of your ID and the privacy form, and a link to enter your details.

  3. Test via Zoom

What happens in the test?

It is not a test of technical aviation knowledge: it assesses how you communicate in English in an aviation context. There are no right or wrong answers to the questions.

Part I · Listening and speaking

Camera on
  • Describe and compare picturesYou start by describing one picture and then compare two. In Level 4 only, you just describe.
  • Questions with an aviation context14 tasks in total, each answered in about 4 or 5 sentences. No technical knowledge is tested.
  • Read back two ATC instructionsYou hear a radio instruction and read it back, just as you would in flight.
  • ATIS or short storyWith a licence (4–6 test): two ATIS messages from which you pick out information such as the QNH. Student pilots hear a short story and answer two questions.

Part II · Interview

10–15 minutes
  • A real conversationYou talk with the examiner about travel, work or hobbies – whatever you enjoy.
  • Voice-only phaseThe examiner switches off their camera for a while. This way, communication without visual contact is assessed too, as provided for in AMC1 FCL.055.
  • Matched to your flyingTopics are adapted to your profile: airline, general aviation, helicopters or flight school.

The six criteria of the ICAO scale

PronunciationClear speech

An accent is fine – what matters is that you are easy to understand.

StructureGrammar and sentences

You control basic structures, and errors don’t change the meaning.

VocabularyRange of words

Enough for familiar topics, and you can rephrase when a word is missing.

FluencyFlow of speech

Appropriate pace, few distracting pauses and suitable linking words.

ComprehensionUnderstanding

You understand even with different accents or unexpected turns.

InteractionsInteraction

You respond quickly, ask when necessary and clear up misunderstandings.

The reference is the ICAO rating scale (Appendix 2 to Part-FCL, ICAO Doc 9835). Your overall level is the lowest of the six ratings.

“Tim did an amazing job! He created a relaxed atmosphere, explained everything nicely in advance […]. After only 40 minutes we were done with the examination, which felt like 10 minutes!”

“The atmosphere during the exam is very pleasant. Everything is handled very professionally and the exam is anything but boring. You don’t feel like you’re sitting an exam, and the time flies.”

After the test

I have my certificate. How do I get it endorsed in my licence?

If your licence is managed by AESA, the update is processed by the Agency itself. This is who does what:

  1. You receive your documents

Your language proficiency certificate and a copy of the approval of LTB 112 by Austro Control, by email within 24 hours.

    We do this
  2. You apply for the endorsement

Via AESA’s electronic office, with form LIC-FCL-P01-F01 or F02 (section G), your documents and proof of fee payment. No Cl@ve or electronic certificate? You can also file it at a public registry office or a Correos post office.

You do this, with our guide
  3. AESA updates your licence

AESA reviews the application and endorses your level; it has a maximum of three months to decide. If you have questions about the application, write to us in English or Spanish.

FAQ

What pilots ask us before booking

Is the certificate valid for a licence issued by AESA?

Yes. Orden FOM/1146/2019 (Article 17.2) states that AESA will accept certificates from assessment bodies whose method has been approved by the aviation authority of another State under Regulation (EU) 1178/2011. Your test is conducted in cooperation with LTB 112, under the supervision of Austro Control. The final endorsement on your licence is made by AESA, in line with its administrative requirements. AESA guide step by step

Why isn’t GAT on AESA’s list of language assessment centres (CECL)?

That list only includes centres whose method AESA has authorised itself. Our assessment body, LTB 112, is approved and supervised by Austro Control, and our examiners appear on its official lists. Spanish regulations explicitly provide for accepting certificates from bodies approved by other authorities that apply Part-FCL.

What do I need to submit to AESA afterwards?

When the assessment was carried out by a body approved by another State, AESA asks for the assessment certificate and a copy of the body’s approval by its authority, together with your application. We send you both documents. You handle the application and the fee yourself via AESA’s electronic office; our AESA guide explains how.

How long does AESA take to endorse the level, and what does it cost?

AESA has a maximum of three months to decide (Orden FOM/1146/2019, Article 3.2), so don’t leave it until the last minute. The licence update fee (tasa 312, tarifa 24.ª) is €23.34 in 2026. You pay it directly to AESA; it is not included in our price.

Does the test replace English radiotelephony privileges?

No. They are two separate entries in section XII of your licence, and to endorse an English level AESA also requires English radiotelephony (RT) privileges. Our test does not grant them. Most pilots trained in English already hold them – check your licence. If yours only cover Spanish, ask AESA how to add English. AESA FAQ (in Spanish)

I don’t have a Spanish NIF or NIE. Can I still apply to AESA?

Yes. In AESA’s electronic office you identify yourself with Cl@ve or an electronic certificate. You can also submit the application at any public registry office, through Correos, at a Spanish consulate, or in person or by post at AESA, Paseo de la Castellana 112, 28046 Madrid. Non-residents can pay the AESA fee by bank transfer. AESA guide step by step

I’m a native English speaker or hold a C2 certificate. Do I need the test at all?

Not necessarily. Orden FOM/1146/2019 (Article 6.1) provides a route to Level 6 without an assessment for native speakers who can prove it and for holders of certain C2-level certificates listed in its Annex II, such as Cambridge CPE or IELTS 7.5 or higher. In both cases you also need radiotelephony privileges in that language. AESA explains the conditions in an information note from February 2025 . If that route doesn’t fit your case, you can go straight for Level 6 in the open Levels 4–6 test.

Does the test include Spanish (castellano)?

No. We assess aviation English only (FCL.055). If you also need a Spanish language level – for example for a Spanish airline – you have to obtain it separately from a centre that assesses Spanish. If Spanish is your native language, there is the Level 6 route AESA provides.

Can I go straight for Level 6?

Yes. You don’t need an existing level, and you don’t have to decide beforehand. In the open Levels 4–6 assessment you are certified at the level you demonstrate, even if you currently hold Level 4 or 5.

How long does the test take?

The test itself takes about 30 minutes. The calendar reserves a 45-minute slot so the ID check and instructions aren’t rushed.

What equipment do I need?

A stable internet connection, a camera, a microphone and speakers or headphones. A laptop or desktop computer is ideal, but a smartphone or tablet also works. Our tech check tests your camera and microphone in a minute.

Which languages do you support?

The test is in English, of course. By phone we speak English and German. In writing – by email and WhatsApp – we answer in English or Spanish.

When do I get my certificate?

Within 24 hours by email, usually on the day of the test, together with the copy of the assessment body’s approval that AESA requires.

What if I don’t reach Level 4?

We send nothing to AESA or your school. You can rebook whenever you like. If you’re unsure, start with a preparation session or the PreCheck.

Can I change the date?

Yes, free of charge up to 24 hours before your slot. After that, the full fee is due.

How long is my level valid?

For pilots, Level 4 is re-evaluated after 4 years (not 3 – that period applies to AFIS personnel) and Level 5 after 6 years. Level 6 is not subject to periodic re-evaluation. If you renew within the three months before expiry, the new validity runs from the previous expiry date, so you don’t lose a single day. Validity and renewal

I’m a student pilot. Can I take the test already?

Yes. Initial assessments and renewals work the same way, and we adapt the tasks to your stage of training. You can take the test at any point in your course, without waiting for your licence.

What times are the slots?

There are slots 7 days a week, evenings included. The calendar shows times in your device’s time zone, so in the Canary Islands you see Canary Islands time. Before you book, check which time zone is selected above the calendar.
